General Safety Tips For The Home

September 6, 2011 in

One of the leading causes of death for children and family members is home accidents. This usually has to do with some simple, yet potentially dangerous things not being in order. In most cases, these sorts of accidents can be prevented with straightforward precautions.

Slips, trips and falls are one of the top accidents that happen in the home. Here are a few simple things to do to help minimize the risk. If you have any cable cords stretching across the floor, or phone cords, make sure they are secured tightly. Better yet, if you can find a way to get them off of the floor and running across the upper wall or ceiling, even better. Be sure to clean up any and all liquid spills immediately when they happen. Check your garage for grease spots left by your cars. Getting those cleaned up will go along way. Think about the amount of tools that are often kept in a garage, and now imagine slipping and falling into any of them. Finally, use an adhesive to secure movable rugs. Movable rugs have a tendency to slip on linoleum floors.

For stair safety, there a few different things to be on top of; make sure that you have a handrail that extends all the way down to the last stair, as some stair cases have handrails that end before the final step and folks may assume it is there, and then lose their balance with nothing to grab onto for support. Be sure to keep a throw rug at the bottom of the stairs, and if carpet on any of the stairs is coming loose, fix it right away. Feet can get snagged easily on loose carpet. Outside steps should be brightly painted or utilized in a well lit spot.

These are just a couple of things to pay attention to in order to increase safety within the home.
